People in Scotland claiming certain benefits are being urged to claim a devolved payment worth £25 each week for children under the age of 16. Families who qualify for the Scottish Child Payment, who are also eligible for the Best Start Grant Early Learning and School Age payments, will receive the additional benefits automatically without the need to apply for them separately.
Children across Scotland are now back at school, but it isn’t too late for families to check whether they are eligible for financial support from Social Security Scotland. The Scottish Child Payment, which is paid every four weeks, was extended to include children aged from six until their 16th birthday last year - meaning there is support through primary school and for most of their secondary education.
If you receive Scottish Child Payment, you will automatically receive Best Start Grant School Age Payment when your children are the right age, unless you opt out. School Age Payment is a one-off award of £294.70 to help with costs of starting school.
Scotland’s devolved welfare system will also notify claimants who qualify by text message when they are checking eligibility for the Best Start Grants. The move to automatic awards will mean less paperwork for tens of thousands of families and ensure that people automatically receive the support to which they are entitled.
The move builds on work already completed to make applying for Social Security Scotland’s five family payments as simple as possible. It also includes the ability to apply for all children in a household on a single form.
