A Scots woman has learned how to walk again after catching a deathly illness on holiday.
Erin Dawe Lane's world 'went dark' after her splitting headache was revealed to be meningitis after a trip to Croatia.
The 27-year-old, from Edinburgh, suffered a 'disconnect' between her brain and body before blacking out while in her mum’s car on the way to hospital.
She awoke four weeks later from a coma in hospital having shed two stone and was unable to hold a pen, reports Edinburgh Live.
Now after battling the cruel brain infection Erin is set to complete an emotional recovery by taking on a distance run at the Edinburgh marathon.
She has recently relocated to the capital having battled through two months of gruelling rehabilitation to pursue a master’s degree in the neurological field.
She said: “On the final day of the holiday I couldn’t go out with my friends, I woke up with the worst headache I’ve ever had in my life.
"A few hours after that I started to vomit.” she said.
"When I was on the plane home I started to vomit even more but luckily someone on the plane was a doctor and sat with me and then rushed me through the airport.
“My father rushed up to London to pick me up and take me home to Dorset.
“The next day I went to my GP and explained my symptoms and said I had pain in my ear and was finding it difficult to urinate and they suspected I might have either an ear or urine infection, so they prescribed me some antibiotics and sent me home.
“I wasn’t getting worse but wasn’t getting better when I get home.
"Around three days after the appointment I was confused, my temperature was above 40 degrees and I was finding it difficult to move around and had a stiff neck.”
