A murderer who battered a night watchman to death died behind bars almost three decades after the brutal killing. William Currie was jailed for life in 1993 for the murder of 54-year-old Robert McCurtie who he beat with a hard object before repeatedly stamping on his head.
The killer was released on licence on September 2014 but was recalled after breaching the conditions of his release. According to Glasgow Live, Currie was found dead in in his cell on the Allanton block of Shotts Prison on May 26, 2021, by prison officers carrying out morning roll call.
Detailed findings of a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) published earlier this week explained the killer had died from heart disease and no precautions could have reasonably been taken by the prison service to prevent it. Details of criminal past were outlined in the report following the hearing in front of Sheriff John Hamilton at Hamilton Sheriff Court.
Currie committed a catalogue of offences throughout his life including; fraud, reset, housebreaking, assault, attempting to pervert the course of justice, robbery and he earned a stint behind bars in 1989 after being convicted of assault with intent to ravish.
He was jailed on March 1993 for the murder of Mr McCurtie at Dumfries indoor market the previous year. After his release on licence in 2014, he was recalled to prison in June 2020 for breaching two of his conditions.
In the March before his death in 2021, he was sentenced to an additional 18-month stretch in prison on drugs charges.
