A Scots dad has told how his young family saw flames engulf a hill near the family’s hotel bungalow after a wildfire broke out. Barry Campbell and wife Claire, from Glasgow, were enjoying a relaxing break in Gouvia, Corfu, with their sons Nathan, five, and Connor, four, when they began to smell smoke on Sunday.
The dad-of-two told the Record that they initially dismissed the odour before receiving emergency alerts on their phones from the local government warning them about the blaze.
Thankfully, the area they are staying in was not impacted by the evacuation but their concerns began to grow as they saw flames take hold of a nearby mountain.
He said: “We could smell smoke yesterday around lunchtime but couldn’t see signs of fire anywhere. After looking around our balcony area, we dismissed this as we couldn’t see anything untoward.
“Then later in the evening at dinner the fire appeared on the nearby hills. It originally didn’t look too bad, and the fire seemed quite small on the hillside. My wife and I were concerned after seeing it but not overly so at this point.
"We received a text from the Greek government on the emergency alert system which gave details on the areas of Corfu that had to be evacuated. Thankfully it didn’t impact our resort but we did query with our resort staff about the proximity of the fires.
“Other hotel guests were panicking last night, one woman went to the bar for four bottles of large water and ran to her room, a bit reminiscent of the covid days of panic buying.
“The fire by this stage was more developed and we were more concerned by how quickly it had grown. Our eldest child was worried and we had to reassure him about the fire being far away. It’s not something you expect to encounter on
