Schools will be closed for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, the government has announced.
On Saturday, it was confirmed that the Queen’s funeral will be held on Monday, September 19. It has been formally declared as a national bank holiday for the entirety of the UK.
The move means that schools will be closed so children can observe the proceedings with their families. The government has also given more clarity on the plans around the funeral this afternoon.

“Schools will be closed, we are not asking them to remain open on the day of the bank holiday,” a notice on the government’s website said, explaining the arrangements for the funeral. It added: “The date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday.
“This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning.”
The funeral will take place at 11am a week on Monday, and will see Her Majesty lie in state for four days beforehand in Westminster Hall.
From there, the funeral procession will travel to Westminster Abbey. Her final resting place will be St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
