Having joined the cast of Coronation Street when he was just nine years old, Sam Aston has literally grown up on the set of the ITV soap. And sharing an insight into his childhood on the show, the 29 year old has exclusively told OK! how there is a special children’s dressing room and opened up about one of his favourite storylines. The actor, who has played Chesney Brown on the cobbles since 2003, told us: “As a kid, doing stuff with Schmeichel [a Great Dane who belonged to Chesney] was amazing.
“All I ever wanted was a dog and I hounded my mum and dad for one, so then to get a dog on Corrie and be working with a Great Dane all the time, I absolutely loved it.” Schmeichel – named after Manchester United footballer Peter Schmeichel – was a beloved Corrie character and popular with fans of the show. Meanwhile Sam also opened up about who he’s closest to on the programme and revealed who he has shared a dressing room with since the age of 16. “Jennie [McAlpine] plays my sister, but she really is like a big sister to me,” he says.
“We’ve always been close and I can go to her for anything and call her any time. I’m also close with Andy [Whyment], Alan [Halsall] and Jimmi [Harkishin] and I share a dressing room with Mikey [North].” He continues: “We have such a laugh. When you’re a kid there’s a special children’s dressing room, then when you turn 16 you get to share with another adult, so I’ve shared with Mikey ever since then.
