Sainsbury's shoppers have been left outraged over new security gates in some of the supermarket's stores said to make "everyone's life harder".
The supermarket giant began installing receipt barriers in a small number of stores across the UK last year, which require self-service shoppers to provide proof of purchase to exit the store.
Fuming shoppers criticised the move at the time, with some even threatening a boycott. Now, the barriers have since been introduced in more shops across the country, such as Fallowfield and Salford, reports the Manchester Evening News.
While a spokesperson for the supermarket has said the barriers is "one of a range of security measures in a small number of stores", it has still angered many customers online.
A number of the supermarket's customers have slammed the move online. In a thread on Reddit, one person wrote: "Not a fan of how this is spreading..."
While another fumed: "Pointless waste of money and time, just makes everyone’s life harder."
A third added: "Almost every self-service checkout I’ve used for at least a year has let me opt-out of a receipt. Guess we’re not doing less-waste-paper anymore?"
While a fourth wrote: "What happens if what you came for wasn’t in? Therefore had no receipt."
The introduction of the security barriers comes as shoppers across the country have been met with soaring prices on supermarket shelves during the cost of living crisis.
Earlier this month, the chief inspector of constabulary told the Mirror police should use 'discretion' when deciding whether to prosecute desperate shoplifters amid rising poverty levels.
