The boyfriend of Sabita Thanwani, who was found dead in March 2022, has admitted killing the student. Maher Maaroufe, 23, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Ms Thanwani at her university accommodation in London.
However, Maaroufe denied her death was murder. His plea has been accepted by the court and he will not stand trial for murder. His plea was entered on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Ms Thanwani, 19, was found with a serious neck injury after a neighbour heard screams coming from her room on March 19 last year. When officers arrived they found her lying under blankets and a duvet on the floor.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 6am. A post-mortem examination gave her cause of death as sharpy force trauma to the neck.
It has been claimed that her attacker had tried to get into another room before leaving the building in Sebastian Street, in Clerkenwell.
Maaroufe, of no fixed abode, was later found by police asleep under a tarpaulin in a garden shed. It has been alleged that he headbutted a police officer while being arrested.
Today (June 30), he appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Broadmoor hospital. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of assault by beating an emergency worker. He was assisted by an Arabic interpreter and was remanded back into custody.
Sentencing will take place in September.
