Roman Kemp would love to replicate his parents Martin and Shirlie’s true romance after a string of failed relationships. But even though he is tentatively on dating apps, he admits he’s not yet ready for a relationship. “Don’t get me wrong, I come from a family of romance,” he says.
“My grandparents were together from when they were 16 and they died on the same day, then you’ve got my mum and dad who have been together for so long. "In an ideal world I’d meet someone in the middle of the street but that’s not reality. But I need to sort myself out first.
I’m not ready to think about someone else until I can sort my own head out.” When we catch up with Roman, 29, he is soaked after motorcycling home in a downpour from Fearne Cotton’s house, where he’d been recording for her wellbeing podcast. Wellness is important to the Capital FM DJ. He has achieved huge success waking up millions of listeners on the breakfast show since 2017, but he hasn’t had it easy.
He’s about to release his part autobiographical, part self-help book, Are You Really OK?. In it he unflinchingly tackles the subject of suicide after contemplating taking his own life in the summer of 2019. At the time, he’d just landed his gig on I’m A Celebrity where he would later endear himself to the nation.
But Roman suffered a breakdown when he stopped taking medication for the depression he’s battled since he was 15. Consumed with feelings of worthlessness and self-hatred, he was planning his next steps when his mum’s face popped up on his phone and made the call that saved him. “I’m insanely grateful Mum called that day,” he says.

Addie Morfoot Contributor Peacock’s “I Love You, You Hate Me” two-part docuseries about the rise and fall of Barney the Dinosaur is the fifth title to launch as part of the platform’s inaugural DocFest and arguably the most anticipated. The docu about the purple dinosaur who preached love and acceptance on PBS “Barney & Friends” debuts Oct. 12 on the streaming service.
Katie Reul editor Two generations of children — and their parents — are familiar with the colossal purple dinosaur that frolicked across their television screens each week. The PBS series “Barney & Friends” amassed 14 seasons between 1992 and 2010 in the course of its lengthy run before coming to a flaming halt. The reasons for the show’s initial success and accursed demise are outlined in a two-part docuseries from director Tommy Avallone, titled “I Love You, You Hate Me,” which is available for streaming on Peacock on Oct. 12. With parallels to Sundance award-winner “Feels Good Man,” the 2020 indie documentary about Pepe the Frog that explores how a meme can be transformed from a comedic icon into a hate symbol, “I Love You, You Hate Me” delves into the lesser-known evils of the Barney bashing movement, when teenagers and adults alike began to bastardize the once-beloved character with acts of violence both physically and online.
Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Rome’s innovative MIA market dedicated to international TV series, feature films, and documentaries kicks off its eighth edition Tuesday, headed by new chief Gaia Tridente, who has added an animation section and been busy raising the curated mart’s international profile. The Oct. 11-15 MIA mart – its acronym stands for the Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo or International Audiovisual Market – this year is positioned prior to the Mipcom content market and conference that runs Oct. 17-20 in Cannes, since Mipcom has shifted its dates back. But this non-voluntary repositioning has not impacted the number of registered MIA attendees, which is up more than 12% compared with past editions. More than 900 international industry execs are registered for the boutique event being held in central Rome’s Palazzo Barberini, which is Italy’s National Ancient Art gallery that during MIA doubles as the market’s hub where company stands are set up amid Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces. Screenings are held in a nearby state-of-the-art multiplex.
