Focusing on genre, the Frontières showcase is emerging as one of the Marché du Film’s biggest market plays, supercharged by this year’s milestone Oscar triumph of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” smart genre’s popularity among an emerging generation of filmmakers and its rising tide as one of the most resilient of independent movie market propositions.
For RKSS, it’s a return, having had great success with their previous “Turbo Kid,” which went on to Sundance, and won a bunch including at SXSW and Fright Fest. “U Are the Universe,” deserves a special mention, given the sheer challenge of completing a project under the pressures of the military action taking place in Ukraine. Frontieres’ second section, its Proof of Concept project showcase, features “Quest of the Gods,” which even at this early stage looks a hugely ambitious film visually, plus – a rarity among genre – the animated feature “Pesta.” “The Handmaid Tale’s” star Nina Kiri is attached to star in “Absolution,” another notable swing in Proof of Concept. These potential standouts join a total of 16 titles showcased this year. There is a notably strong sci-fi contingent among psychological horror, and more classic genre. “Science fiction is just something that fascinates because it’s open. You can really do whatever you want, create worlds that don’t exist because no one knows what’s out there,” argued Annick Mahnert, Frontières executive director. Another notable trend is a diversification in countries of origin, this year’s selection including titles from Ukraine and Serbia, Bosnia & Herzogovina and Montenegro, Mahnert told Variety. “I’m so glad to see these countries starting to submit

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor The TV Academy has a problem with Jon Stewart’s Emmys submission and has forced a change. Apple TV+ and the creative teams behind “The Problem With Jon Stewart” had plans to compete in the outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special category, where its first season received an Emmy nomination last year. However, the Television Academy has denied its submission and moved the show to the outstanding talk series category, where it will face off against late-night hosts such as Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers. The other eligible nominees for last year’s outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special — Netflix’s “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman,” Showtime’s “Vice” and winner “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” — will remain in the category for consideration.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Elsa Zylberstein (“Simone: Woman of the Century”) will star as the French feminist writer Simone de Beauvoir in a feature film that will be penned by Oscar-winning writer Christopher Hampton and directed by Anne Fontaine. Zylberstein’s Sonia Films will produce the film with Philippe Carcassone’s banner Cine@ and Master Movie, the production vehicle of Marco and Lola Pacchioni. Rather than a biopic, the movie will revolve around the passionate transatlantic romance between de Beauvoir and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Nelson Algren. Zylberstein has scooped the adaptation rights of de Beauvoir’s “Lettres à Nelson Algren” from Gallimard. Through those letters, the film will chart the pair’s affair, which spanned nearly two decades from 1947, in the aftermath of World War II, to 1964. Two-thirds of the movie will take place in Chicago, and the reminder will unfold in Paris.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Maïwenn’s historical drama, “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, is slated to world premiere on opening night of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned. The movie marks Depp’s acting comeback after a three-year hiatus following his long legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard which culminated in a defamation trial won by Depp in December. Maïwenn’s sixth feature, the period movie revolves around the tumultuous relationship of the French king Louis XV and his lover, Jeanne du Barry (played by Maiwenn), whom he brought into the Versailles Palace to live near him even though she wasn’t a noble. Louis XV, who was nicknamed “the beloved,” ultimately died as an unpopular king after being accused of corruption. He reigned for 59 years, the longest in the history of France after that of Louis XIV. Depp barely spoke French before the start of filming so it will be interesting to see how he pulls it off without an accent.
