Rishi Sunak has refused to rule out holding a general election in May.
The Prime Minister laughed but declined to say when an election would be held when questioned on BBC Radio 2.
There had been suggestions that Sunak would call an election soon after his press conference in Downing Street last week.
The Tory PM has previously said that his "working assumption" is that the general election will take place in the second half of this year.
An election must be held by January 28 next year.
Asked by Jeremy Vine on BBC Radio 2 whether there would be an election in May, the Prime Minister laughed and said: “I’m not going to say anything extra about that.
“What I would say is what matters is the choice at that election, and the choice, especially after this Budget, is clear.
“Our plans are working. Of course there’s more work to do, we are starting to deliver the change that people want to see and if we stick with that plan people can have the peace of mind that there is a brighter future for them and their families.”
Labour has repeatedly called on Sunak to call an election, while SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn also did so on Wednesday.
A recent poll put the Tories on a record low of 20 per cent at the general election.
For an election to take place in May, Sunak would need to call it in March or early April.
This is because there is a six-week campaign period.
