An ultra rare copy of a Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone book has sold at auction for a whopping £15,000.
Carina Haouchine was one of only 15 people in the UK to win one of the prize editions in 2012. As a 15-year-old schoolgirl, she entered a competition to find the biggest Harry Potter fan before walking away with the signed and dedicated edition.
The book was safely stored away in a cupboard at her childhood home in Glasgow - before a fire broke out in the tenement block earlier this year. Thankfully it escaped unscathed with documentary film-maker Carina, 26, then deciding to sell it to fund her upcoming nuptials.
Speaking after the auction on Tuesday, she said: “The book was kept hidden away in my childhood bedroom and then in the storage cupboard of my tenement flat in Glasgow.
“The tenement experienced a tragic fire at the beginning of the year. Thankfully nobody was injured but it is now uninhabitable. I’m very grateful the book survived.
“The ground floor of the building and stairwell were badly damaged but my flat, which was on the second floor, wasn’t affected - including the cupboard where the book was stored.
“I decided to sell the book because I recently got engaged to my girlfriend so the money from the sale would be very helpful to put towards our wedding and future. I’m thrilled with the result and very grateful to my 15-year-old self.”
