He is the current Sound of Scotland and Ayrshire rapper Bemz will be taking his Scottish Music Award to the world with a special gig in Edinburgh.
The rapper, now based in Glasgow, plays Edinburgh’s Hogmanay First Footin’ event on Monday. He’ll be on at 4pm at the Assembly Rooms as part of the free programme of live music around the city.
Here, Bemz looks forward to 2024 and counts his blessings for 2023 which also saw him reach the final 10 in the Scottish Album of the Year with third EP Nova’s Dad.
Is this the first time you’ve played Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations?
Yeah, it is that. I am honoured to be performing.
Ever been as a punter?
Nah, I’m usually a homebody on Hogmanay, so this is
something different and I’m glad to be in Edinburgh for it. My daughter (Nova) won’t be there unfortunately but after it, I will be back home to see her which is great.
Are you a fan of Hogmanay?
It is what it; it makes people happy and I’m here for that. I’m always grateful to see the end of the year and start a new one as not everyone gets the chance to.
What do you make of having to perform in Edinburgh as there’s nothing like that in Glasgow nowadays?
I didn’t think I’d be spending my new year in Edinburgh but I’m excited for it.
How was 2023 for you?
Good because a lot of moves were made and we reached new heights, did things we didn’t think we would be doing and played some amazing shows. Of course, same as everything and everyone, it’s not always roses. We took some losses, made some changes and had many sleepless nights but that’s the joys of life.
What did it mean to be given the Sound of Scotland award at the Scottish Music Awards?
It meant a lot and was a solid way to close out the year, you know? I’m forever grateful
