Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding was not just a romantic fairytale, but also an occasion that made royal history. It marked a first for the monarchy.
The couple wed on May 19 2018 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, two years after their blind date set up by a mutual friend. Their engagement announcement came in November the year following.
While the ceremony largely held onto traditional royal customs, one particular moment stood out from the norm. Meghan's birth father, Thomas Markle, was notably absent. In a unique twist, Charles took upon himself the role of walking Meghan down the aisle.
Just before the big day, Kensington Palace released the statement: "Ms. Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St. George's Chapel on her Wedding Day. The Prince of Wales is Pleased to Be Able to Welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way," the Mirror reports.
Setting a precedent, Meghan chose to complete half of the shared walk alone, before being joined by Charles at the Quire of St. George's Chapel where he walked her down the remaining aisle stretch.
This marked the first instance of a royal bride embarking on a portion of the aisle walk unaccompanied. Meghan had a special surprise for Prince Harry on their wedding day. She chose to wear a stylish dress designed by British fashion designer Clare Waight Keller, the artistic director of Givenchy.
The Kensington Palace announcement described the dress as reflecting "timeless minimal elegance". It was made of silk, featured three-quarter-length sleeves, an open boat neckline and a train with a built-in triple silk organza underskirt, without any lace or embellishments.
