Piers Morgan has revealed the challenges he faced when interviewing Hannah Ingram-Moore, the daughter of Captain Tom, blasting her "blatantly untrue" answers and "deeply unethical" actions. The late Captain Tom raised £40 million for the NHS during the Covid pandemic, after completing 100 laps of his garden by his 100th birthday.
Tom went on to make £800,000 from the sale of three books he had written, but it has emerged that rather than the proceeds going to the Captain Tom Foundation as the public had assumed, they were instead pocketed by his family.
The 58 year old described his new TalkTV interview with Hannah and her husband Colin as "one of the most difficult interviews of my career" in his column with The Sun. Piers, 58, wrote, "I asked all the questions people have been wanting to ask them, and which journalists have sometimes been getting very obtuse or even blatantly untrue answers to, and the truth has finally emerged." He added, "The Ingram-Moores finally admitted that they pocketed over £800,000 from the proceeds of three Captain Tom books, money that the public will have assumed from various publicity statements at the time was going to the Captain Tom Foundation.
What they did wasn’t illegal but many will think it’s immoral. Hannah also reveals that she accepted £18,000 to present awards at a ceremony named after the Foundation, when she was CEO of the Foundation." Piers did, however, go on to add that it "would take a heart of stone not to feel some empathy for a family who undoubtedly did a lot of good" and branded the torrents of abuse they have received as "appalling".
