Nexstar CEO Perry Sook says the Hollywood community has “responded” to the company’s overhaul of The CW, and sports rights conversations have been “steady” since the company started airing LIV Golf this year.
“They’re talking to everybody in Hollywood,” Sook said of CW chief Dennis Miller and programming head Brad Schwartz. “One of the most pleasant surprises following our takeover is that when we said that the doors are open, let’s talk about doing business, the community responded. It’s in everybody’s best interest that there’s a viable fifth network competitive out there.”
Sook delivered the comments during the company’s first quarter earnings call, adding that The CW has limited exposure to the WGA strike given its new focus on unscripted fare.
Earlier Tuesday, Nexstar reported diluted earnings per share of $2.97, which was down significantly from the $5.99 it posted in the political-ad-fueled 2022 period but better than Wall Street analysts’ consensus expectation. Total revenue also topped forecasts, increasing 4% to $1.257 billion.
Last September 30, Nexstar obtained a 75% stake in The CW, with previous 50-50 partners Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery retaining 12.5% apiece. The timing of the deal’s close will make year-to-year comparisons inexact until the fourth quarter. When the CW was factored out, Nexstar said, its first-quarter revenue slipped 1% to $1.2 billion. In addition to the absence of political ad revenue in the current-year quarter, Nexstar also noted the lack of Olympics ad proceeds on the company’s NBC affiliates.
Distribution revenue set a record in the quarter, driven by a renewal with YouTube TV for the CW, NewsNation and Nexstar’s 40 CBS affiliate stations. That agreement included the

With all the headlines dedicated to the #MeToo movement over the past few years, it can sometimes feel like the industry has made progress — certainly, enough to launch several biopics and television shows about its own misconduct. But this is still a time when “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” actress Adèle Haenel feels compelled to quit the French film industry in protest, and when the director of the Cannes Film Festival feels the need to say, out loud, that Cannes is not a “festival for rapists.” READ MORE: Cannes Director Says Event Is Not “A Festival For Rapists” Needless to say, there’s still work to be done, and it’s good that these conversations continue to happen – especially when they involve an icon of the French film industry, Marion Cotillard.
Blur frontman Damon Albarn has said that Brexit has been a “travesty” in a new interview.Speaking to Channel 4, Albarn explained that Brexit has been a “disaster” for younger musicians.“In the old days, pre-Brexit, you could be a young band and go over to Europe and play bottom of the bill at festivals. You wouldn’t be paid hardly anything but the experience was life-changing, whether you went on to do bigger and better things in the future [or not]. That’s a solid foundation for the rest of your life,” Albarn said.“That kind of creativity has very much been curtailed for people on this island, because it’s expensive to go over there now.
The CW that audiences see when they tune in this fall won’t look like the CW of years past – but it also won’t look like the CW that new owner Nexstar actually intends to offer consumers moving forward. In a move similar to its broadcast competition, the CW released a fall schedule meant to be practically immune to the effects of the ongoing writers strike. It’s an acquisition-heavy lineup that’s a mix of comedies (Canadian sitcoms including “Children Ruin Everything” and “Run the Burbs”), dramas (former AMC series “61st Street”) and unscripted fare (the salvaged HBO Max hit “FBoy Island”). The only potential hiccup would be a strike-related production delay for “All American,” one of two CW shows that new network president Dennis Miller and entertainment president Brad Schwartz have decided to keep moving forward. As much as Schwartz doesn’t like the perception that there is anything wrong with an acquisition, he and Miller told Variety that isn’t the center of their scheduling strategy, but rather a path they had to take this first year because of production uncertainties. Here, Variety speaks with Schwartz and Miller about the network’s plans for adult dramas, programming to Black audiences following the success of “All American,” going hard on unscripted with “FBoy Island,” and the path to making the former Paramount/Warner Bros. Discovery-owned channel profitable for Nexstar.

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Elon Musk claims he’s hired someone to replace him as CEO of Twitter. But for now, the tech tycoon isn’t revealing who that is. “Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter,” the mega-billionaire tweeted Thursday. “She will be starting in ~6 weeks! My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.” Back in December, Musk said he would step aside as Twitter’s chief executive once he found “someone foolish enough” to take over the role. Even then, however, the billionaire will retain control of the social network and remain closely involved in running it. Musk closed a $44 billion deal for Twitter in October 2022, but he’s since said he now values the company at less than half that — at $20 billion.
