Paul Mescal Talks Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’ & The “20 Years” It Will Take To Make ‘Merrily We Roll Along’

Paul Mescal has spoken about the process of making the much-anticipated Gladiator 2, confirming that there is a scene in which he “fights with baboons”. The Irish actor was speaking on the red carpet ahead of the BAFTA Film Awards, where he is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in All Of Us Strangers. Speaking to Alex Zane, he spoke about the experience of making the film.

The animated category seemed at first glance to be wide open, with Hayao Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed film The Boy and The Heron leading the pack by only the tiniest of margins. Paul Mescal lead romantic fantasy film All Of Us Strangers.Written and directed by Andrew Haigh (Weekend, 45 Years), the film is the second screen adaptation of the 1987 novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada.A synopsis for the film reads: “One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life.“As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.”After accepting the loss of his parents, Adam (Scott) goes to see Harry (Mescal) in his flat only to find Harry’s dead body in the bedroom, with the same bottle he was drinking from on the night they met, only now it’s empty.Adam leaves the room and is confronted by Harry’s ghost, who is seemingly unaware of his own death. Adam reassures him, telling him that it isn’t his corpse in the bedroom, before inviting him back to his flat.They both lie in bed together and Harry’s ghost asks him to put on a song to fill the silence.

All Of Us Strangers, released in cinemas this week, and recently uncovered some details about their friendship during an exclusive interview with NME.Scott, best-known to fans of BBC sitcom Fleabag as the ‘Hot Priest’, revealed his reaction to Mescal dressing up as the character for Halloween in 2022. The image, which also features Mescal’s Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones in costume as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s titular ‘Fleabag’, went viral and has since become a frequently referenced moment in Mescal’s career.

Paul Mescal has confirmed he has finished filming the Gladiator sequel.Director Ridley Scott announced he had written the sequel for his 2000 original film back in 2021; by January 2023, Mescal was in talks to star in the film.
