Ricky Martin is the star of Apple TV+’s Palm Royale and has come a long way in the acting field, not forgetting his beginnings in Mexico.
While appearing on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen asked Martin if General Hospital is where he cut his teeth acting.
“I did a lot of theater in Mexico before, and I did TV series’ in Mexico, and even film in Mexico,” he said. “So I would give Mexico a lot of credit for my preparation.”
After leaving the boyband Menudo, Martin got an opportunity to star in the musical comedy Mamá Ama el Rock in Mexico City. The singer would then be offered a role in the TelevisaUnivision telenovela Alcanzar Una Estrella II, where he played a member of a pop band. Following the success of the series, Martin would also star in a film based on the show.
Martin joined the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital in 1994, playing the role of Miguel Morez.
Of his time working at General Hospital, Martin said, “Daytime television is very difficult. It’s not easy. You gotta learn 20 scenes a day. Mad respect, it’s very cool.”
When Cohen asked Martin who his favorite scene partner was, Martin said Lilly Melgar, who played Lily Coriunthos in the soap.
“She was amazing,” Martin said of Melgar.
In Palm Royale, Martin plays Robert Diaz, a bartender at the country club the show takes place at and Carol Burnett’s Norma’s caretaker. Kristen Wiig stars in the Apple TV+ series as Maxine Simmons a woman who endeavors to break into the Palm Beach high society during the powder keg year of 1969.
