Over 800,000 families could be in for an electricity bill shocker if they fail to take action by the end of March 2024.
Electricity supply experts at Elexon have revealed that hundreds of thousands of households across the UK are still relying on old-fashioned Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meters. These meters are set to stop functioning after March 31 next year as the service is switched off. The service was originally supposed to be shut off in 2014. However, energy suppliers have retained it to allow more customers to be moved over to other meters.
But figures collected in June this year state that some customers at some of the UK's biggest energy firms - including Scottish Power and E.ON Next - continue on the outdated system. This means that these households are at risk of losing functionality if meters are not replaced by next April, reports Chronicle Live.
Energy tariffs such as Economy 7 and other multi-rate options still rely on the RTS signal, with hundreds of thousands of consumers impacted. The signal is picked up by meters and used to switch electricity rates at different points throughout the day, with some times cheaper to use supply than others on these tariffs. The signal can also be used to automatically turn heating and hot water systems on or off during certain hours.
However, when the signal is switched off, these meters may be left jammed on during peak times, meaning customers could see bills rise.
For example, cheaper overnight rates are offered by certain tariffs, making day use at peak times much more expensive in comparison. But the switch off could tamper with the routine of customers, and some heating systems controlled by RTS are at risk of being left on or off permanently.
