The cast of Oppenheimer staged a walk-out from its London premiere as a Hollywood actors' strike was confirmed. Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon were among those who left the star-studded event to “write their picket signs”.
It came ahead of a press conference by the Sag-Aftra union in Los Angeles, declaring it had agreed to strike. The decision came after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to produce new contracts for members on Thursday.
The strike is set to affect upcoming award shows, premieres, events and film festivals around the world. It will include the Toronto and Venice film festivals, and the 75th Emmys.

The anticipated announcement cast a shadow over the premiere at the Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square. The film’s major stars along with Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Rami Malek all left before the screening of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic.
Speaking on stage at the premiere ahead of the strike announcement, filmmaker Nolan said: “I have to acknowledge the work of our incredible cast, led by Cillian Murphy. The list is enormous — Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and so many more. You’ve seen them here earlier on the red carpet.
“Unfortunately, they are off to write their picket signs for what we believe to be an imminent strike by SAG, joining one of my guilds, the Writers Guild, in the struggle for fair wages for working members of their union."
The strike means that 160,000 performers will join the picket line, joining a separate strike by writers. The

International cinema chain Vue says it has recorded its “best ever week” in large part due to the Barbie and Oppenheimer releases ten days ago.
Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor For cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, the challenge with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” was about capturing what was going on inside the head of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the A-bomb — what he’s thinking and what we can read in his eyes. For costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, whether it was a two-piece suit or three-piece suit, it was his silhouette.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has generated a lot of headlines due to its nudity and sex scenes, the first of the director’s career. Cillian Murphy, who plays the title character in Nolan’s biographical drama, was recently asked by GQ UK to weigh in on all of the buzz surrounding the “Oppenheimer” sex scenes, to which Murphy said they were “vital” to the film.
summer blockbuster “Oppenheimer” is surely not bombing at the box office, but there is one scene in the movie that isn’t hitting the right target. One moment in the three-hour film starring Cillian Murphy shows a historical error that viewers pointed out on Twitter. In the shot, the Irish actor, 47, stands in the middle of a crowd, who all clap and cheer for him while they wave American flags. The dramatic epic about the life of nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer takes place in the early 1940s, but the flags featured white stars that represent 50 states — despite the country only having 48 in 1945 when the scene took place.Hawaii and Alaska, the last two entities to be annexed to the United States, were not added until 1959.Eagle-eyed fan Andy Craig revealed the mistake on social media, sharing a snapshot of the scene, and his post quickly went viral.“It was good and all, but I’ll be that guy and complain they used 50-star flags in a scene set in 1945,” he tweeted.Other fans agreed with his discovery and even called out Nolan, 52, for the incorrect usage.“Totally ruined the film for me,” a person claimed.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer handed UK cinema chain Vue its second biggest weekend in history as cinemagoers flocked in record numbers to catch the Barbenheimer double bill.
McKinley Franklin editor No one is immune to the cultural craze that is “Barbenheimer” — including Quentin Tarantino. Moviegoers across the globe assembled over the weekend to celebrate the debut of both Greta Gerwig’s pink and plastic-permeated “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s atomic history piece “Oppenheimer.” With both films opening on the same day, many ticket buyers picked up same-day viewings of the films — Tarantino among them. In a photograph posted to Twitter, a user snapped a picture of the filmmaker in Los Angeles with Roger Avary, his “Pulp Fiction” co-writer and co-host on the pair’s Video Archives Podcast. The caption shared that Tarantino walked across the street after seeing “Oppenheimer” to buy tickets for “Barbie,” going from the Westwood Village to the Regency Bruin Theatre.

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Hey, if it ain’t broke — don’t fix it. Imax developed control software that emulates a two-decade-old PalmPilot PDA for the release of Christopher Nolan’s three-hour “Oppenheimer” epic. The 70mm Imax print of “Oppenheimer” comprises a whopping 11 miles of film stock weighing about 600 pounds, and required the company to build extensions to accommodate the larger size of the film platters. That’s because Imax’s existing platters could only hold enough film for a 150-minute runtime. Imax’s PalmPilot software runs the projection systems’ Quick Turn Reel Unit, which manages the operation and transition between multiple reels.
Howard Stern that fellow Oscar winner Kate Winslet couldn’t hold back her contempt over his attempt to pass for an Englishman during a unique joint audition for Nancy Meyers’ “The Holiday,” back in 2006, with Winslet, Cameron Diaz, and “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon. “[Jimmy and I] both got called in just as seat-fillers,” the “Oppenheimer” and “Iron Man” actor recalled. “Jack Black is getting his part and Jude Law is definitely getting my part, but [Meyers] needed someone to read with the gals, and we’re sitting there going, ‘It’s about to happen for us.’”“I was like, I’ve got to have a better English accent than Jude Law at this point, and Winslet said, ‘That is the worst British accent I’ve ever heard in my life,'” Downey Jr.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Matt Damon revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Christopher Nolan found his way into one of the actor’s couples therapy sessions. While avoiding marital specifics, Damon said that he told his wife he would take an acting break on only one condition: If Christopher Nolan called, the break could go on hold. His wife agreed to the terms. As fate would have it, Nolan did call with an offer for Damon to star in “Oppenheimer.” “This is going to sound made up, but it’s actually true,” Damon said. “I had — not to get too personal — negotiated extensively with my wife that I was taking time off. I had been in ‘Interstellar’ and then Chris put me on ice for a couple of movies, so I wasn’t in the rotation, but I actually negotiated in couples therapy — this is a true story — the one caveat to my taking time off was if Chris Nolan called. This is without knowing whether or not he was working on anything, because he never tells you. He just calls you out of the blue. And so, it was a moment in my household.”
McKinley Franklin editor Christopher Nolan cast his eldest daughter in a gruesome role for his forthcoming feature “Oppenheimer.” Speaking with the Telegraph, Nolan revealed that his daughter, Flora, visited the “Oppenheimer” set, alongside his wife and producer Emma Thomas, while the film was still in production. Nolan then had the idea to cast Flora in a then-open role: a nameless young woman who has her face damaged by a nuclear explosion in a sequence within the main character’s mind. “We needed someone to do that small part of a somewhat experimental and spontaneous sequence,” Nolan said. “So it was wonderful to just have her sort of roll with it.”
