While at the 2023 Miami Film Festival, Nicolas addressed complaints about the hold superhero flicks have on the public.
“I’ve gotta be nice about Marvel movies,” he said, noting that he named himself after Stan Lee‘s character Luke Cage.
“I understand what the frustration is,” he continued,” according to Variety. “But I think there’s plenty of room for everybody. I’m seeing movies like Tár. I’m seeing all kinds of artistic and independently driven movies. I think there’s plenty of room for everybody.”
He added that he didn’t need to be a member of the MCU, saying “I’m Nic Cage” as his reasoning.
Nicolas also reflected on another superhero role he sadly didn’t get to play – Superman in the ’90s.
The actor said that he “cast” Tim Burton to direct the film because of his work in the Batman franchise.
While the role didn’t come to fruition, Nicolas hinted that he would have been playing an “emo” version of the classic hero.
“It was more of a 1980s Superman with like, the samurai black long hair. I thought it was gonna be a really different, sort of emo Superman, but we never got there,” he said.
The actor also revealed his thoughts on joining the Star Wars franchise.
