People making a new claim for devolved benefits, or those transferring from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) IT system to the Social Security Scotland platform, are being warned not to be caught out by cold-callers, pretending to be official local client support advisers.
More than 254,000 people are still receiving Personal Independence Payments (PIP) from DWP and due to move to Adult Disability Payment (ADP) before the end of 2025. Similarly, some people on Disability Living Allowance (DLA) will also be transferring to ADP.
Social Security Scotland has local advisers in communities across the country who can meet applicants in a convenient place to help them with benefit claims, or offer expert advice. Social Security Scotland said: “Any meetings or calls will always take place at a pre-arranged appointment agreed with the client at a time and place that suits them. We will never cold call people at home or contact them unexpectedly. Our advisers will always carry identity cards.”
It added that sometimes these meetings are best arranged at someone’s house. However, Social Security Scotland stressed: “We will only contact a client if they have first contacted us for support or if they have been referred due to a current application or case transfer from the Department for Work and Pensions.
“In this instance, we will call via our Appointment Booking Team. A Client Support Adviser will then be in touch to confirm the details of the appointment.”
Scotland’s welfare body warned: “Anyone who is unexpectedly approached at home by someone claiming to be one of our colleagues, we recommend they contact the police.”
Anyone with any concerns is urged to contact Social Security Scotland on 0800 182 2222 between 8am-6pm,
