Government minister Grant Shapps has demanded that supermarket bosses 'stop overcharging at the petrol pump'. The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero 'called in' bosses from the likes of Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's calling on them to reduce prices.
It follows a recent announcement from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which highlighted that motorists have been hit with higher fuel prices since 2019 as supermarket fuel margins have surged, adding an additional 6p per litre.
To address this issue, the CMA has unveiled plans for a "fuel finder data scheme", aiming to provide consumers with instant access to fuel prices and ultimately drive down costs. The Government has expressed its support for this scheme, stating that it will monitor prices and margins continuously and take further action if necessary to safeguard competition in the market.
Mr Shapps, MP for Welwyn Hatfield, released a video on Twitter on Monday (July 18) saying: "Today I met with retail bosses to call for an end to inexcusable behaviour in over-charging at the pump."
"I just got off a call with supermarket and petrol station bosses," he continued, "to demand that they immediately stop overcharging you at the petrol pump.
"When their costs were falling, they kept prices high and refused to pass on savings to you. Well, there's no excuse and the Government is saying 'enough is enough'.
"I wanted you to know that, first, we've demanded an immediate end to overcharging, and I told bosses they must hand over their price data This will mean you can find the best deal and you can be alerted if anyone tries to rip you off again."
He also said that those he spoke to supported the CMA scheme.

Familiar to millions of TV watchers as the drug dealer Fez in two seasons of Euphoria, alongside the likes of Zendaya (as Rue), Jacob Elordi (Nate) and Sydney Sweeney (Cassie), the 25 year old was born and raised in an Irish-American family, living in Oakland and attending Oakland School for the Arts, where he studied technical theatre. Angus eventually relocated to New York with future hopes of putting down roots in his ancestral homeland of Ireland, but a random ticket to fame put the brakes on those plans.

McKinley Franklin editor All eyes are on Harry Styles as he takes the center of a circus ring in his freshly dropped music video for “Daylight.” The brightly colored visualizer, put together by Tanu Muiño (who also directed the video for “As It Was”), kicks off with an image of an ascending, sky-high ladder set in front of a hazy yellow sky. Styles descends down the ladder, revealing the backstage landscape of a circus crew adorned by just about every act that could be featured in such a decadent show. In the final moments of the song’s chorus, Styles is dramatically catapulted out of a cannon, in which he soars over the circus performers dressed in an embellished yellow look enhanced with a set of wings. The outfit noticeably resembles that of a bird — but not so much the “bluebird” that Styles mentions in his pre-chorus.
