The redevelopment of the Mill Gate shopping centre is a step closer. Bury council has agreed a masterplan to build homes, retail, leisure and hospitality space.
A 'regeneration framework' for the 15-acre site has been approved by the town hall’s cabinet this week.
The framework has been created by property developer Bruntwood and the town hall after consultation with the community. The council said it outlines ambitious redevelopment plans as part of the wider town centre masterplan.
They said the proposed seven-figure regeneration scheme includes the transformation of the Mill Gate and surrounding areas and would ‘strengthen the town centre as a leading retail destination within Greater Manchester’.
They aim to ‘create jobs, deliver new homes, provide high quality public spaces and improve connectivity’.
The scheme also seeks to enhance links with Bury Market and The Rock. Joint partners Bruntwood and Bury Council said they had engaged with the Bury community, hosting events showing plans for the site, as well as a
consultation where local people could share their thoughts on the plans.
Feedback from the consultation was then used to inform the regeneration framework. Chris Roberts, chief development officer at Bruntwood, said: “Community feedback has been crucial to shaping our Regeneration Framework and we’re really grateful to the people of Bury for sharing their thoughts on the future of the town centre. “Our plans mark the next exciting step in creating a dynamic and inspiring environment for local residents, businesses, and visitors.
