Netflix has struck an overall deal with the Colombian producers behind The Hijacking of Flight 601 (Secuestro del Vuelo 601), which launches on the streamer today.
Camilo Prince and Pablo González, the writers, directors and showrunners of Flight 601, have signed an agreement to produce further shows and films out of Colombia.
They are known for Netflix shows such as Colombian-Mexican true-crime drama Colmenares (Crime Diaries) and bank robbery series El Robo del Siglo (The Great Heist), and will now work even closer with the streamer.
The Hijacking of Flight 601 launches today on Netflix. The drama is based on the the 1973 hijacking of SAM Colombia Flight HK-1274 by two Paraguayan soccer players who held the plane and its 84 passengers for a ransom.
“This new deal is an indication of Netflix’s commitment to the Lat Am market and to Colombian stories and productions,” said Gonzalez and Prince in a statement. “Just this year alone Netflix will release two major Colombian productions: our series, The Hijacking of Flight 601, and the upcoming adaptation of 100 Years of Solitude.
“These titles prove that Colombia has become a major production hub in the region.In our new partnership with Netflix, we are eager to continue making bigger and more ambitious Colombian shows that reach audiences all over the world.”
Gonzalez and Prince are also known for directing episodes of HBO original Mil Colmillos, and recently developed their third original series, Salsa, which also has Narcos and Godfather of Harlem creator Chris Brancato and Narcos production house Dynamo on board.
Netflix has had an office in Bogota, Colombia, since 2021, and has been making original shows and films in the South American country since 2017.
