Netflix has resumed production for season six of acclaimed royal drama The Crown and sources say the platform recreated the death of Princess Diana over the weekend
Following a hiatus due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September, filming is underway in Barcelona with the Catalan city’s Francesc Macia Square reported to play the French set for the devastating scene.
Local press reported this weekend that the show was to shoot the events leading up to Diana’s 1997 trip to Paris, where she would suddenly pass away in a car accident. On Saturday, the Sun reports that Catalan daily El Periodico said: “The scene filmed is the fatal car accident Lady Di suffered.”
Catalan online news website NacioDigital, who claim the temporary break led to a filming location change said: “The producers of the series wanted to carry out one of the most critical moments in the history of the British monarchy in the Jardinets de Gracia, the death of Diana in a traffic accident. This Friday and Saturday filming took place in Francesc Macia Square.”
As a Catalan broadcaster who was reporting closely from set, NacioDigital added: “In this legendary city square they shoot the critical moment when the paparazzi chase Lady Di’s car through Paris.”
Netflix previously told the Sun that “the exact moment of the crash impact will not be shown.”
The highly successful series has recently come under hefty fire, with a number of high profile British figures coming forward to condemn its writing. Last week, former British PM John Major, played by Trainspotting star Johnny Lee Miller, criticised a storyline showing King Charles plotting to oust his mum, prompting Netflix bosses to defend the show.

The latest season of The Crown isn’t even out yet and it’s already the center of major controversy!
The first trailer of Season 5 of The Crown has dropped and it explores chaos unfolding within the monarchy and Princess Diana's explosive BBC interview with Martin Bashir.
Dame Judi Dench has called for a disclaimer to be added to each episode of The Crown, saying the hit Netflix drama has begun to verge on “crude sensationalism”.The screen and stage veteran said despite previous statements by the streaming giant that the show is a “fictionalised drama”, there was a risk that “a significant number of viewers” would take its events as historical truth. She added that “wounding suggestions apparently contained in the new series” would prove “damaging” to the monarchy and could not go unchallenged.
Nearly two and a half years after Josh O’Connor declared “The Crown” would not include Prince Charles‘ infamous “Tampongate” phone call with Camilla Parker Bowles, it’s now been confirmed it actually is happening, and it’s O’Connor’s successor, Dominic West, who spilled the tea.
Netflix has released some new images of Season 5 of The Crown, including character posters with the tagline “A House Divided,” revealing a split between the two sides.
to the Irish Sun, the scenes depicting Diana’s tragic death have “sparked fury.”Princess Diana died in 1997 at 37 following a car accident in Paris’ Pont de l’Alma tunnel while she was being pursued by paparazzi, sparking an international period of mourning. A source from the show reportedly said that crew members are speaking out about the depiction of her death on-screen.“To be going back to Paris and turning Diana’s final days and hours into a drama feels very uncomfortable. Finally, some of the crew members are pushing back,” they told the Sun. “The show always tried to present a fictional version of royal history with as much sensitivity as possible.
The next series of The Crown is set to be released on Netflix on November 9 and will detail the Royal Family’s lives for the first half of the 1990s. Series five will largely focus on the breakdown of the marriage between Princess Diana and the then Prince Charles, which will include the controversial Panorama interview, according to reports.
