Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan delighted fans by returning to Neighbours for its finale episode, but many viewers were left puzzled over how little the duo said while in Ramsay Street. The stars' characters, Charlene and Scott Robinson, were seen driving back to where they first met and meeting up with various residents. However, they had very little to say to their old pals.
Now, the soap's executive producer has revealed why. Speaking to TV Tonight, Jason Herbison said the pair filmed their special appearance before he had even written the final episode – so what they said had to fit in with the rest of the storyline. He added that the 54 year old stars.
who both found fame on the soap back in the '80s, didn't want their highly-anticipated return to “overshadow” the show and its latest cast members. "Our discussions with Jason and Kylie were always about making a small appearance," Jason said. "They didn't want to overshadow the current cast or make the finale about them.
We also filmed their scenes before I'd written the episode, so whatever we filmed had to fit in with that." The producer went on to defend Kylie as she's faced a backlash on social media, saying: “I hate to see Kylie copping any criticism – she was nothing short of amazing on the day.” Some fans came up with theories about their lack of dialogue, saying Kylie could have been paid “word for word”. One viewer tweeted: “Don’t buy it. Few sentences could have been said it was pointless returning for just that, and that’s coming from a lifelong viewer.” Another quipped: “It was a pretty benign scene which they could easily have fitted into any script.
