Nasa has launched its Artemis moon rocket today after two previous failed attempts. The rocket, which is the most powerful to have ever launched, successfully took off on Wednesday morning after years of delays and billions in cost overruns.
An empty crew capsule has been propelled into a wide orbit around the moon and will attempt to land a probe in its south pole. The passenger capsule of the rocket is expected to touch back down in the Pacific in December.
It is hoped this un-crewed mission will pave the way for a crewed flight test, with future plans to create a human colony on the moon to allow for further space exploration.
The Space Launch System rocket thundered skyward, rising from Kennedy Space Centre on 8.8 million pounds (4 million kilograms) of thrust and hitting 100 mph (160 kph) within seconds. The Orion capsule was perched on top, ready to bust out of Earth orbit toward the moon not quite two hours into the flight.
As reported in the Mirror, the rocket was kept bouncing between its hangar and the pad after nearly three months of vexing fuel leaks. It was also forced back indoors by Hurricane Ian at the end of September but the rocket sustained gusts of more than 80 mph last week when Hurricane Nicole swept through.
Managers gave the green light for launch despite the wind peeling away a 10-foot strip of caulking high up near the capsule.
Crowds gathered outside of the Kennedy Space Centre to watch the launch as NASA expected 15,000 to jam the launch site, with thousands more lining the beaches and roads outside the gates. The long-awaited sequel to Project Apollo, when 12 astronauts walked on the moon from 1969 and 1972, was also showcase on giant screens in NASA centres in Houston and Huntsville, Alabama.
