'My window blew up into my face' - The Stalybridge estate left devastated by the Storm Gerrit tornado

The first sign of devastation on the Carrbrook Estate in Stalybridge — the area decimated by a ‘tornado’ on Wednesday night (December 27) — was the sound of sweeping.
Residents were armed with brushes on Calico Crescent, carrying out their own clean-up on Friday (December 29). But the damage caused by Storm Gerrit has run deep in the estate in the shadow of the moors.
A quick glance around showed roofs stripped away, walls in pieces, car windows shattered beyond repair, and strands of insulation wool clinging to every surface in the street. Vans for tradespeople littered the roads, with insurance assessors also going from property to property.
The scene was one of complete upheaval — but despite that, residents were putting on a brave face. But the damage hasn’t just run deep in the buildings — it’s run deep inside them.

“The rear elevation has gone,” Oliver Jones, 35, said when asked what damage the storm did to his home of nine years. It was the start of a long list.
“There’s a hole in the roof. The patio doors need replacing. My new patio has gone, I only had that done two months ago. All the top stones have gone. My house will need redecorating.”
Although it’s an expensive list, Oliver is still smiling as he sweeps up debris in the road, as residents make piles of it on the pavements to allow council workers to clear it away more easily. He’s joking with another neighbour — but he might not have been here to tell the tale.
