When a woman from Lancashire was pregnant with her second son, she was diagnosed with kidney disease that would change the rest of her life.
Emma Edwards gave birth to her son in the year 2000, but whilst she was pregnant, doctors were concerned that she might have pre-eclampsia, or high-blood pressure after urine tests showed something was going on. Sending her for scans after she gave birth to her son in the December, results showed that she had one scarred kidney and one kidney that was leaking protein.
A few years later as Emma's kidneys worsened, medical professionals at Burnley Hospital informed the mum that it was "now or never" to have another child and in 2006, she gave birth to her daughter. Around two years later, the 41-year-old from Colne says her "kidneys completely failed" and she went on dialysis - a term the mum-of-three says that not a lot of people truly know about.

Being on dialysis for a few years, it was when her husband, Craig Edwards came forward that she was able to undergo a kidney transplant on September, 29 2012. "Never in a million years did we think that he would be a match," Emma told LancsLive.
"But it came back that he was a match, but my body couldn't accept the kidney donor from him direct and it still came back that he couldn't." As a result of this, the family went through a process where someone can choose to donate a kidney to a stranger and in turn, it triggers a chain of transplants through the scheme.
