When Stephanie Roberts and her partner James found out they were expecting their second child, the couple were worried about facing the ‘typical’ parenting dilemmas associated with having two children under two. But following Casper’s birth 15 months ago, the couple’s life turned upside down when he was diagnosed with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS). Affecting just 1,000 people worldwide, the rare condition impacts how the autonomic nervous system manages breathing and can cause breathing to stop.
Here, 33 year old Stephanie shares Casper’s story and shines a light on the work she is doing to find a cure for CCHS… “Bedtime with a toddler and a baby is always going to be hectic, but for our family, it’s also a matter of life or death. After getting my boys into their pyjamas and reading them a story, I usually have to battle to get Max, three, settled before going into his baby brother Casper’s room to get him down for the night. The doorbell rings as I try to soothe him, as it has done every night since we brought Casper home from the hospital. The nurse who’s arrived will watch him closely all night, but first we have to strap a breathing mask to his face and an alarmed oxygen monitor to his tiny foot. Without this help, falling asleep could kill my baby.
With his ultra-rare condition, Casper’s little body forgets to breathe and so he’s kept alive by a ventilator. My pregnancy and Casper’s birth had been stress-free. “We’ll certainly have our hands full with two children under two,” I told my partner James, 33.
If only a normal, chaotic family life was all we had to worry about. Looking at our newborn son tucked up beside my hospital bed, we expected to take him home next morning. In reality, it would

What could the future possibly hold for an artist if they have grown too comfortable with success? If they have stayed put in that snug place of glory, but the times have moved on fast without them? These are the hefty considerations at the heart of “Paint,” a slight comedy that sadly embraces neither the worthwhile questions that surround its central premise nor the story’s dark humor potential. That’s too bad, because writer-director Brit McAdams’ narrative feature debut is rooted in a genuinely fascinating subject that apparently served as an inspiration for “Paint.” McAdam’s muse is Bob Ross, a real-life American public television mainstay of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Being the host of a successful PBS show called “The Joy of Painting” during that time, Ross built a loyal audience who loved and were mesmerized by his soothing voice, and even haunted by his creative process and ease with a brush, as Ross slowly created his art in front of curious eyes, narrating it softly and philosophically.
