As a child I didn’t understand what I was missing or why I didn’t fit in. I only had one good friend through school, mostly because I wasn’t interested in what other kids and teenagers enjoyed. There were about 25 children in my tiny village school and my time there wasn’t happy.
I struggled to find my place so I faded into the background. I sat in the library at lunchtime and joined a chess club to stay out of people’s way. When I was eight years old my school had a dinner lady who all the girls fawned over.
I had no interest in her and she was bothered by that - she’d often single me out. On top of this, I was constantly in trouble for breaking playground rules. I’d cross lines, step on the grass and play in the wrong place.
As a result I’d spend a lot of time facing a wall as punishment. I didn’t mind it - I wasn’t interested in playing. It meant I could be quiet and everyone left me alone for a while.
One day a teacher made 180 pupils do the conga around me for several minutes because I didn’t react to the punishment in the way she’d wanted. Looking back, I realise what an unhappy adult she must have been. She
