The mum of a bullied schoolgirl who tried to take her own life after receiving online rape threats has slammed social media firms for allowing kids to spread damaging content through their platforms.In the wake of the Record's Our Kids, Our Future campaign, the mum-of-three has called on social media giants to clamp down on abusive content before it can circulate. Her 13-year-old daughter, from Springburn in Glasgow, attempted suicide in October last year after she endured a sickening string of abuse on Snapchat from classmates.
Inappropriate images circulated on Snapchat after she was peer-pressured into sending them to an unknown user. The pictures were shared among her classmates at, which prompted a wave of disturbing threats and taunts from other pupils.
The mum, who has spoken to the Record anonymously amid fears for her daughter's safety, believes stronger measures must be taken to prevent youths from sharing hateful content online.
She said: "When my daughter wasn't getting bullied in school, she was coming home and getting bullied online. It was 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The pictures were sent into group chats and spread so fast. These companies must be able to see what content is being shared far and wide, and identify what is harmful.
"They pick and choose what goes against their guidelines, and in our circumstance it was child abuse."
The mum is also calling on tech companies to raise their age requirements for creating accounts from 13 to 16 - after the horrific levels of abuse her daughter suffered.
She continued: "I don't understand why kids are being allowed onto these apps. The age should be raised to 16. There is a level of maturity that doesn't exist at 13."
