A mum was left furious after discovering her son received detention in his first week of school because he didn't have a pencil case. Leah Tamsin blasted the "unjustifiable" punishment from Bodmin College in Cornwall - as she didn't know a case was mandatory.
The mum was critical of the discipline at the secondary school, saying that uniform and behavioural expectations are creating "a negative environment and mindset for children", and saying "needless" detentions are being given out far too regularly, reports Cornwall Live.
Leah's son, who just started Year 9, had all the necessary equipment - such as pencils, pens, rubbers, and a ruler - but just carried them in his backpack, rather than a designated pencil case. She said: "My son had a detention for not having a pencil case despite the teacher checking he did have all the correct equipment. This was deemed justifiable for a detention."
Taking a sarcastic swipe at the school's decision, the mum said: "He will definitely be a better student with better grades once I get him a pencil case."
Leah added: "I was under the assumption that as long as children turned up to each class with the correct equipment - calculator, black pens, pencils, rubber, ruler etc - that was sufficient enough for work to be done and lessons to progress."
"My concern is that children should be positively encouraged into school and to remain in class. Aside from the bigger changes to uniform and behavioural expectations, needless timeouts and detentions for the children will quickly create a negative environment and mindset for the children.
"It may very quickly become the attitude of 'why should I even bother at all if, when I do make an effort, it is greeted with a detention?'. Children should not
