A mum allegedly beat her five-year-old son before poisoning him to death with antidepressants after splitting up with her partner, a murder trial has heard. Claire Scanlon, 38, is charged with the murder of her son, Dylan, who died in Oldham in 2021.
Emergency services were called after Ms Scanlon reported that Dylan was unresponsive on New Years Eve, and he was sadly pronounced dead at a house on Elm Road, Minshull Street Crown Court heard.
He was found with multiple bruises over his head and face, and a toxicology report showed he had a fatal dose of Mirtazapine, an antidepressant, in his system, prosecutors allege.
A police investigation ensued which revealed a large number of ‘angry’ voicemails to her ex-partner, Gary Keenan, in which she said he left her for another woman whilst she struggled to live ‘emotionally, practically and financially’ as a single mum.
Prosecutors allege that Ms Scanlon was ‘very angry and depressed’ at the breakdown of her relationship.
In one voicemail, she said: “I promise you, you won’t see him again. You’ll see. Bye. Go and enjoy your life”.
A few days later Dylan had died and police found a note that suggested she had planned for both she and Dylan to die, the court heard. In it, she wrote: "Don't let them see us, just cremate us, all this could have been avoided if his family and Gary would have left us alone."
Ms Scanlon, of Limeside, Oldham, denies murdering her son, and is on trial at Minshull Street Crown Court.
Prosecuting, Lisa Wilding KC told jurors that Ms Scanlon had met Mr Keenan in 2005, and that she had a son from a previous relationship, Shawn Scanlon, who Mr Keenan took on as his own.
In October 2016, Dylan was born and all seemed well until the relationship broke down

And it’s with you.’ And then he just rolled up his script and just smacked me on the head with it and was like, ‘Does that help?,'” Waller-Bridge told the “Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James” show.

"I think the important thing is, we get into this mindset of canceling everything or everyone. And that’s not unhealthy because it’s like, ‘OK then …’ Because what you’re saying is every time somebody says something, then it’s just over," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
