Is it kind of ridiculous? Yes, but it’s also the reboot of Dynasty you never knew you wanted, one that’s best watched with a living room full of your rowdiest and most opinionated friends.

Christmas ClassicsIf you like a little horror to go with your ho-ho-ho, the big news for the season is “Krampus: The Naughty Cut” (Scream Factory; December 7). The 4K debut of this creepy Christmas saga gives director and co-writer Michael Dougherty the opportunity to put back in some scary scenes and adult language that had to be trimmed to get the holiday hit a PG-13 rating.

New-Release WallFor all the standard reasons physical media matters — the exclusive extras, the permanence compared to many streaming platforms — 2021 has added yet another: Audiences who for various reasons don’t feel secure about going into theaters can enjoy big-screen releases in the safety of their homes. After a hybrid release for “Black Widow,” Disney/Marvel went theatrical-only with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and it’s a gamble that paid off at the box office.

New Indie“I Carry You With Me” (Sony Pictures Classics) is a film best enjoyed without spoilers, but suffice it to say that it’s one of the year’s most moving love stories. Aspiring chef Iván (Armando Espitia) and landowner’s son Gerardo (Christian Vazquez) fall in love, but societal pressures in Mexico prompt Iván to cross the border and move to New York City.

New Indie“Zola” (Lionsgate) is the first film based on a viral Twitter thread (and probably won’t be the last), but it’s compelling viewing for reasons that have nothing to do with its provenance. Taylour Paige (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) stars as A’Ziah “Zola” King, a waitress and sometimes stripper whose epic road trip to Florida hits one bump after another.

New IndieWe’ll probably spend the next decade or so speculating on the impact certain films might have made had they not been released in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. One movie that could have had a bigger splash was “The Water Man” (RLJE Films), David Oyelowo’s impressive directorial debut.

Much like the character themselves in the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” “Black Widow” is dropping surprisingly early. Marvel Studios’ latest feature film is launching on all major digital platforms come August 10 and then on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on September 14.

New IndieEmma Seligman’s impressive “Shiva Baby” (Utopia) premieres on Blu-ray this month, and it’s a blisteringly funny, character-based comedy about a young Danielle (played by Rachel Sennott) whose rootless life when she attends a shiva with her parents (Fred Melamed and Polly Draper), only to encounter the boyfriend who’s financially supporting her, his wife — whom Danielle didn’t know existed — and Danielle’s ex-girlfriend.

Must of the MonthA great way to celebrate Pride this year is with The Signifyin’ Works of Marlon Riggs, a Criterion Collection box set that pays tribute to an essential voice in LGBTQ+ cinema and Black filmmaking.

New IndiePeter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones make a somewhat unusual couple in “The Sound of Silence” (IFC Films), a somewhat unusual film. And it’s not that Sarsgaard and Jones don’t have chemistry to burn; it’s that the movie operates at its own pace while diving deeply into the Sarsgaard character’s obsessions with the thrums and throbs and vibrations of our day-to-day lives.
