Mindy Kaling is opening up about writing the upcoming movie Legally Blonde 3 and why the project is taking so long to finish.
The former Mindy Project and The Office actress previously worked with Reese Witherspoon on the movie A Wrinkle in Time and they’ve remained friends ever since then.
While appearing on iHeartPodcast’s “Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi,” Mindy gave an update on the third Elle Woods movie. The interview was conducted right before the Hollywood strikes, which is why she was allowed to talk about the project.

“Obviously, now we sort of have pencils down because of the writer strike, but it’s had a couple of iterations over the past couple of years,” Mindy said. “And I think it’s a challenging project because of what makes it so great. Elle Woods is like Reese‘s ‘Avengers’ character and people feel so passionately about this. I’m just someone who’s coming in to co-write the third movie and even I see how excited people are. And what is Elle Woods doing in 2023 or 2024 when culture has changed so much since then? And so that’s tricky as a writer – writing something that is incredibly funny and is a great role for Reese, but is saying something about feminism now…”
Mindy added, “[Reese is] shooting shows and movies and everything else, so there isn’t this sense from her that she’s in any desperation or anxiety about getting back into the role. She loves the character and wants to do it if it’s exactly right…So it’s been taking some time.”
Reese had to deny a report about her net worth earlier this month.
