Following Meghan Markle's successful dismissal of her half-sister's defamation lawsuit, it's timely to reflect on the strained relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and Samantha Markle.
Samantha launched a defamation case against estranged sister Meghan in March 2022. This came just after Harry and Meghan's explosive Oprah interview and before their bombshell Netflix docuseries was thrust into the public eye.
Samantha accused Meghan of defaming her by both sharing information with an unofficial biography called 'Finding Freedom' and also divulging details about their relationship on live TV with Oprah Winfrey which rocked the monarchy.
She also claimed that Meghan and Harry's docuseries, which was added to Netflix a year ago, spread "malicious, hurtful, and damaging lies". Samantha updated her lawsuit just hours before the judge's two-week deadline, after he initially agreed to dismiss the original claim according to the Mirror.
At the time, Samantha claimed that Meghan attempted to "demonise" her and depict her as a "liar and fame seeker" on her show. She also suggested that some of Meghan's supporters had begun "hate-filled smear campaigns" against her.
However, it has now been revealed that the case is to be dismissed, with prejudice, meaning she cannot raise the claim again. But this isn't the only issue Meghan and Samantha have had before, because their feud has been long-running for many years.
According to Samantha, she and Meghan were close when they were growing up, although this is not backed by the Duchess. The pair are 17 years apart and did not grow up at the same time.
