While it wasn’t always her plan to join the family business, Raessa Lea is fifth generation to work at Manchester-based Towing Solutions Ltd and has embraced her role leading the business and helping it grow over the years.
She left behind her career in sales and marketing to become company director in 2008 and, when her dad decided to retire in 2020, Raessa was left to carry on the family legacy.
Like many business owners, she was forced to close the doors when the pandemic hit and many staff left. She then heard about the 12-week executive development programme Help to Grow: Management Course at Manchester Metropolitan University and knew it was the perfect opportunity to take the business forward.
Aimed at small and medium-sized businesses (between five and 249 employees) across the North West, it includes 50 hours of in-depth training and covers everything from finance to understanding your vision and values and provides peer mentorship.
The deadline to apply for the next course is May 9.
Raessa said: “I’m always trying to improve and this sounded like the perfect opportunity to help the business grow. The programme is helping me focus on growing the business, not just the day-to-day.
“I didn’t realise it, but I had lost quite a lot of confidence. Not in my business abilities, but when it came to dealing with the continuous knocks we were facing.”
The mentor sessions have been vital to helping Raessa understand what she wants to get out of the programme. “You get an outside perspective on your business which is useful, especially as the group is so varied, with everyone from entrepreneurs to SMEs with 100 employees.”
Networking has been a great opportunity for Raessa too and she has already started making changes
