Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Max, taking a page from Netflix, is giving subscribers insight into daily top-trending movies and TV shows on the platform. Warner Bros. Discovery launched the new Max top 10 lists on Thursday, beginning in the U.S.
“Starting today you’ll see Top 10 rows within the app that update daily to show you which series and films everyone is watching,” the Max account posted on X (aka Twitter). Max’s Top 10 Movies and Top 10 Series rankings appear in-app on profiles for adult users, on the homepage and the Series and Movies pages. The lists are designed provide an additional entry-point for Max subscribers to find new content to watch.
On Aug. 31, the top-trending movie on Max in the U.S. was “The Flash,” the DC superhero movie (and box-office dud) that landed on the service last Friday.
On the TV side, the top series was HBO’s latest installment in the “Hard Knocks” franchise, which follows this year’s training camp for the New York Jets under new quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Top 10 lists on Max are calculated by the number of unique user profiles that watch a title, with the rankings refreshed daily. A title must be viewed for at least 2 minutes to be factored into the calculation.
In addition, content must be recently added to Max to be eligible for Top 10. The lists rank shows that have released a new episode on Max within the prior six-week period, and movies that have been added to Max within the past eight-week period. These are the Top 10 TV series on Max on Aug.
