A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department told the BBC that they were called to an address in the Pacific Palisades area because of a "water emergency".
TMZ reports suggest that there was no foul play involved in Matthew's death and no "illicit narcotics" were found at his home. It adds that the autopsy report states that Matthew died at his residence and that his body is now ready to released to his family for burial or cremation.
The circumstances of his death are said to be being looked into by authorities. It's reported that Matthew had been playing pickleball, a game similar to squash, for over an hour before he went home to relax.
When he got home, he asked his assistant to run an errand for him. When the assistant returned, they found Matthew unresponsive in the water and immediately called for help. Matthew has previously spoken openly about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction.
