The investigation into the death of Friends star Matthew Perry has been closed by Los Angeles police, following the coroner's ruling that it was an 'accidental' death.
The actor, best known for his role as Chandler Bing, was found lifeless in his hot tub at his LA home on 28 October 2023. Despite no signs of foul play or drug paraphernalia at the scene, the coroner later determined that he died from the severe effects of ketamine.
Other factors contributing to his death included drowning, heart disease, and the impact of the prescription drug buprenorphine, used for treating opioid addiction. The LAPD confirmed to People magazine that the case is now closed, with records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner also sealed.
At the time of Perry's death, his blood ketamine levels were similar to those of a hospital patient under general anaesthesia.
The medical examiner explained: "Drowning contributes due to the likelihood of submersion into the pool as he lapsed into unconsciousness; coronary artery disease contributes due to exacerbation of ketamine induced myocardial effects on the heart." No alcohol, cocaine, meth, heroin or fentanyl was found in the actor's system. He had previously been receiving ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression but his last session came a week and a half before his tragic death, while the drug only stays in the system for three to four hours.
The autopsy report also showed Perry was "reportedly clean for 19 months" before his untimely passing. It is unknown how he took the ketamine that eventually killed him, and no pills were reported "near the pool" or "found adjacent" to it.
The therapy couldn't realistically cause such high levels of the drug to remain in his system.
