A brand new Manchester restaurant, which only opened its doors this weekend, has already been named one of the ‘most exciting’ in the UK. Higher Ground, a former pop-up which has now found a permanent home on the edge of Chinatown, was listed in the 30 best things about food in the UK right now in the Observer Food Monthly magazine.
The restaurant’s chef Joe Otway was among a handful of people listed who are behind new and exciting projects across the country, and was named ‘Manchester’s most creative chef’. Higher Ground launched to the public on Friday, with the Manchester Evening News getting a sneak preview of the new menu the night before.

Highlights included a cheddar tart, made with Pitchfork cheddar, a slow-cooked pork shoulder ragu, and mash made from Marfona variety potatoes that comes topped with a lake of smoked butter.
Otway has opened the restaurant with friends Richard Cossins and Daniel Craig Martin, after they all met working at a Michelin-starred restaurant in New York. The trio also own Flawd, the wine bar and restaurant on New Islington Marina.
It wasn’t the only Manchester location to get noted in the ‘30 things we love in the world of food right now’ list. New ‘old school butty shop’ Caff, which has set up shop on First Street, als got a mention.
The shop, actually a bright yellow shipping container, opened up in October last year by the team behind food traders market Grub, priding itself on breakfast sandwiches, classic ham salads, egg and cress, and Seabrooks crisps, all for under £4.
