A British man has been released after he was sentenced in Cyprus for the manslaughter of his terminally ill wife.
David Hunter, 76, was on trial for killing his spouse of 52 years, Janice, who died from asphyxiation near the coastal resort town of Paphos in December 2021. The pensioner was cleared of the more serious charge of premeditated murder after telling the court she 'cried and begged' him to end her life due to the blood cancer she suffered from.
He was jailed for two years at the Cypriot court on Monday however. However he has been allowed to walk free due to spending time on remand and good behaviour. The pensioner had already spent 19 months in prison and Cyprus classifies ten months in jail as the equivalent to one year, the Mirror reports.

His legal team argued that he should have received a suspended sentence and there was "no point in keeping him in prison any longer". Prior to handing the sentence, the judge highlighted the need to take into account future cases.
ITV reported they said: "There may never have been a case like this in Cyprus. We have no doubt many people are crippled by difficulties of life including health issues.
"The message to society cannot be taking away human life - even with intention of relieving suffering- it’s a crime. No one can choose when someone’s life will end. We take into account sentence must send that message to society.
"We determine a jail sentence is unavoidable." The couple's daughter Lesley Cawthorne earlier said the family was "apprehensive" ahead of the sentencing hearing.
