A man has been rushed to hospital after crashing into a stationary unmarked police car this afternoon.
The man, driving a black Peugeot 308, collided into the back of the cop car on the A77 southbound just before 2pm.
The driver was rushed to hospital although the extent of his injuries or his condition has not been disclosed by officials.
Police chiefs confirmed tonight that their officers were not in the car at the time of the smash and were not injured.
Enquiries are now ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the serious smash.
The major road was closed for almost six hours with the southbound carriageway opening at 8.10pm this evening.
Police halted drivers from accessing the A77 southbound shortly after the crash with officers blocking the slip road.
Drivers were evacuated from the major route by driving on the wrong side of the road.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1.40pm on Monday, April 3, 2023, a vehicle on the A77 at the Bellfield Interchange collided into the back of a stationary unmarked police car.
"The male driver of the car, a black Peugeot 308 has been taken to hospital.
"The officers from the police car, who were not in the car at the time, were not injured. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what has happened."
