A man has been forced to wash himself in his garden using a bucket after his power was cut off over a £17,000 energy bill dispute. Nick, who did not want to give his surname, claims he is also no longer able to cook and has been living off cold or pre-prepared food since his gas and electricity was disconnected several weeks ago.
The 37-year-old moved into his shared house in Edgbaston last November and pays £500-a-month in rent, which includes bills, to letting agent Virtual Room. However, he says he stopped the payments when power was cut off to the property on July 19.
Nick claims he has struggled to contact the housing company since which, according to its website, has a Birmingham phone number and offices in the Jewellery Quarter. He says he has sent over photos of the letters from energy companies stating the amount owed, Birmingham Live reports.
BirminghamLive was also unable to obtain any response from the firm despite making phone calls, sending emails and visiting its Jewellery Quarter address. Its website was not displaying any properties for sale or rent when our reporter checked on September 6 and neighbouring companies sharing the address listed on its site said they had never heard of the firm.
Nick said his girlfriend had moved out of the house because of the lack of power, while he was left fearing the approach of winter. His washing routine involved him leaving a tub of cold water outside in the morning, and then showering in the late afternoon once the water had been warmed by the sun, he said.
