A man has been arrested for throwing shotgun cartridges into the grounds of Buckingham Palace just days before King Charles’ Coronation is due to take place on Saturday.The attack took place at around 7pm this evening, with the royal residence soon cordoned off from the public in the wake of the attack. Officers at the scene reported that the man was also carrying a suspicious bag, with his belongings now being examined by specialist investigators.
A controlled explosion was carried out outside Buckingham Palace after a man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, the Metropolitan Police said. He was arrested at around 7pm after he approached the gates and threw items, suspected to be shotgun cartridges, into the Palace grounds.
Chief Superintendent Joseph McDonald said: “Officers worked immediately to detain the man and he has been taken into police custody. “There have been no reports of any shots fired, or any injuries to officers or members of the public.
“Officers remain at the scene and further enquiries are ongoing.” The incident comes just four days ahead of the historic coronation ceremony in which King Charles III will formally be crowned the monarch. Ahead of the occasion, security in London has already been placed on high alert, with police having been fully prepared to take action if anyone groups were “plotting to sabotage” the event.
The high profile occasion will see thousands of people descend upon the capital to celebrate the sovereign’s formal accession to the throne, with a number of foreign royals and dignitaries due to attend.
