Summer is fast approaching, which means it’s time to start thinking about new additions to our wardrobes. With so many trends emerging, it can be difficult to decide what to invest in when it comes to handbags. If you’re struggling to narrow it down, we recommend going with straw and raffia accessories as they’re both timeless and match all summer outfits.
The Loewe Raffia Basket Bag, which retails at £450 here, is the “it” accessory of the moment for those looking to get involved in the “French girl” trend that has taken summer fashion by storm. Handcrafted with raffia and leather, the bag has become a cult piece for luxury fashion lovers due to its simple and elegant design. However, for those of us looking to replicate this trend on a budget, £450 seems like an excessive amount to spend on a handbag.
Luckily for us, M&S has come out with the perfect dupe for £400 less. “Very similar” to the Loewe Raffia Bag, say shoppers and TikTokers, the M&S Straw Striped Tote Bag retails at just £45 here, and is finally back in stock after previously selling out. Fitted with an outside pocket and an internal zip for those of us who are always losing things, the bag is an easy-to-wear staple that will remain trendy for years to come.
Available in a natural shade, like the classic Loewe bag, as well as pink and white, you can pick your favourite colour or treat yourself to all three to ensure you have a bag to suit every outfit. We recommend pairing it with linen trousers and your favourite lightweight blazer for a clean cut, tailored look that’s perfect for any day out as the weather (finally) improves. Looking for a straw alternative at an even lower price? This Contrast Binding Straw Bag is just £16.50 here from Shein.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Leading lights of contemporary Iranian cinema, including ‘Holy Spider’ actor Zar Amir Ebrahimi, ‘The Siren’ director Sepideh Farsi, ‘The Opponent’ helmer Milad Alami and producer Kaveh Farnham, turned up at the Cannes Film Festival to raise the alarm on the repression faced by Iranian cinema during a session hosted by Amazon Prime Video’s Sahar Baghery. Iran has been the centerstage of widespread protests driven by women against the Islamic Regime since Mahsa Amini died in police custody for for wearing her hijab too loosely in September 2022. Although the rebellion has garnered vocal support outside of Iran, it hasn’t succeeded in dethroning the Iranian Regime. A number of dissident Iranian filmmakers and talent have been jailed over the last six months, notably Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof who was recently released from prison. Rasoulof was nevertheless banned from leaving Iran to serve on the jury of Un Certain Regard at Cannes.

Three Floors” opened with a high-profile belly flop, festival-stalwart Nanni Moretti returns to Cannes with “A Brighter Tomorrow,” a comeback of sorts that also airs a list of grievances and could serve – should need arise – as a closing statement. Not that it likely will. Funny and endearing in some places, and typically grumpy and old-fashioned in others, “A Brighter Tomorrow” should, at very least, keep Moretti far from director’s jail for years to come.

A version of this story about the Cannes market first appeared in Cannes issue of TheWrap magazine.Saying last year’s Cannes was a return to normal might have been a misnomer. Sure, COVID was manageable and people were able to gather in person without the mandatory testing of previous years, but the transition from almost two years of isolation back to travel was a slow one.
