The Lyrid meteor shower will reach its peak across the UK tonight, treating stargazers to up to 18 meteors an hour.
The celestial display is expected to peak in the early hours of April 23 and will be visible all across the sky. Meteor showers, or shooting stars, are caused when pieces of debris known as meteorites enter Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of around 43 miles per second, burning up and causing streaks of light.
The Lyrid shower takes its name from the constellation of Lyra, where the shooting stars appear to originate from. The meteor shower, which originally began on April 14, is the product of leftover debris from Comet Thatcher which occurs every year around mid to late April.

As the Earth passes through the debris they burn up and light up the sky. It's believed to be the oldest recorded cosmic event in history with records dating as far back as 687 BCE.
The Lyrids will be visible in both the northern and southern hemispheres and UK stargazers should be able to catch a glimpse of the meteor shower due to the sheer size of the event. But when and where will you be able to see it most clearly?
As with all meteor showers, in order to see the Lyrids it is necessary to find a dark site with an unobstructed view of the sky. To increase your chances of seeing the meteors, your best bet is to find somewhere away from the city where there is little to no light pollution.
Fortunately, you won't need any special equipment or telescopes as the cosmic event can be seen clearly by the naked eye - as long as the optimal environmental conditions are met. A bright sky will drown out the fainter meteors, making them much more difficult

When a judge finally granted the divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll in 1963, he famously delivered a blistering three-hour and seven-minute rebuke of Duchess Margaret Campbell, disguised as a judgment, where he branded her a “completely promiscuous woman.” The divorce case was filled with accusations by her husband, Ian Campbell, the Duke, of flagrant adultrey, titilating rumors about sexual liaisons coded in her diaries, and much discussion about a scandalous Polaroid photograph of Margaret in an intimate act with someone other than her husband.
