The former CEO at the hospital where Lucy Letby murdered seven babies went to become a director of one Greater Manchester’s biggest hospital trusts – just months after resigning during the police investigation into the killer nurse.
Hospital boss Tony Chambers resigned in September 2018 from his role as the chief executive of the Countess of Chester Hospital following Lucy Letby’s arrest in July 2018. By December, he had already been given a director role at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, the Manchester Evening News can exclusively reveal.
It comes as Letby was sentenced yesterday (Monday) to a whole life order at Manchester Crown Court. She will never be released from jail. The 33-year-old was convicted on Friday of the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more during her shifts at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016.
Another of Letby’s former bosses, Alison Kelly, left the Countess of Chester after allegations were made to her about the killer nurse by concerned doctors. She went on to become the interim director of nursing at Salford Royal before becoming the director of nursing for Rochdale – a position she has now been suspended from in the wake of the Letby’s conviction.

Mr Chambers had been CEO at the Countess, where he earned up to £160,000 a year, the Mirror reports. The boss quit the hospital within weeks of Letby’s arrest in July 2018.
By December 2018, he had been made a director at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, which ran its namesake hospital. He had already bought a £550,000 Grade II-listed home in Bolton with his wife in 2017.
